Pool Deck Slope and Drainage in Wake County

A residential concrete pool deck in Wake Forest serves two functions: it provides a walking and lounging surface around the pool and it manages surface water runoff away from the pool and away from the house foundation. Both functions depend on getting the slab slope, joint placement, and drainage tie-ins correct at pour time.

The minimum slope for a concrete pool deck is 1/8 inch per linear foot away from the pool coping. Most designs use 1/4 inch per foot on the primary walking surfaces and 1/8 inch per foot on secondary or landscape edges. Any slope shallower than 1/8 inch per foot allows surface water to pond, and any slope steeper than 1/2 inch per foot becomes uncomfortable for walking barefoot.

Surface water on the deck has to go somewhere. On smaller pool decks under 400 square feet, sheet flow off the slab edge into a mulched landscape bed is often adequate. On larger decks, or decks that abut a driveway, walkway, or house foundation on more than one side, we integrate a channel drain (also called a strip drain or trench drain) around the far edge of the deck opposite the pool. The channel drain ties into a solid PVC drainage line that discharges to a swale, curb, or day-lighted outlet at least 10 feet from the house foundation.

Expansion joints between the pool coping and the concrete deck are non-negotiable. The pool structure and the deck slab are two different masses of concrete with different loads, different sun exposure, and different thermal expansion behavior. If the two are rigidly connected, the deck will crack against the coping every freeze-thaw cycle. Every pool deck we pour uses a 1/2-inch pre-formed expansion joint filler between the deck edge and the pool coping, plus additional expansion joints at any house wall, retaining wall, or column contact.

Deck slab thickness is 4 inches minimum for residential pools, with #4 rebar on 16-inch centers or 6x6 W1.4/W1.4 welded wire mesh reinforcement chair-supported at mid-depth. The mix is a 3000 PSI residential design with 5 to 7 percent entrained air for freeze-thaw exposure. Broom finish or salt finish is standard; smooth trowel is not appropriate for pool decks because it is too slippery when wet.

Wake County requires a permit for any pool deck installation because the deck is part of the pool safety zone. Wake Forest, Raleigh, and Youngsville all have specific pool barrier requirements that affect the deck layout, and we coordinate with the pool builder or the homeowner to make sure the deck design meets the local barrier code. Every deck pour is inspected before backfill, and the inspection catches any layout errors before they become finished-work problems.
